 Single hung and double hung windows are probably the windows that most of us are familiar with. These are the windows that go up and down. If only the bottom section moves, then it is a single hung window. If the top and bottom section of the window moves then it is a double hung window.Single hung and double hung windows have been made of wood, steel, aluminum and vinyl. Each type of material has their advantages and disadvantages. Steel is the strongest, but needs maintenance. Vinyl needs the least amount of maintenance but is the weakest. Aluminum is the best overall, but is expensive and not the most thermally efficient. Double hung and Single Hung windolws have the largest number of parts in them. Thus Double Hung and Single Hung windows have the largest number of parts to break. Of all of the classes of parts in our inventory these windows take the lion’s share. Whole sections are set up with balances (spiral, block and tackle, clock spring and constant force, to just mention a few), locks, shoes, retainers, guides, pivots, etc. With so many parts that must work together, it is easy to see how a small part breaking can put a whole window out of commission.
