![]() Horizontal sliding windows are the ones that slide back and forth. They are made of wood, aluminum and vinyl and have the simplest operating mechanisms, with the fewest moving parts. If you like the look of the slider you will have the most economical of all windows to buy, easiest and the cheapest to maintain. Maintenance on a sliding window is simple and very straightforward. You start with cleaning the tracks (top and bottom), checking the rollers, then lubricating the rollers, track and lock with a silicone spray; I do not recommend oil. Next check the corners to make sure they are not separated. If the window is over five years old take a look at the weather stripping to make sure you are getting a good seal. If the window is setting straight and true in the opening, with everything else checked out you ought to have a window that will give you several years of good service.
